When NYU Langone Health surgeons met 17-year-old Byamba Erdene-Amgalan during a surgical mission to Mongolia, he was living with a life-threatening jaw injury that couldn’t be treated with the equipment available. Knowing they could help, the team arranged for him to travel to New York for lifesaving care. Byamba had developed the injury after surgery to remove a benign tumor. Surgeons in Mongolia reconstructed his jaw with a metal plate, but as he grew, the hardware didn’t. It eventually began
