A new 2-mile highway linking I-5 and the Port of Tacoma is coming and here’s an animation of what it will look like. Part of the SR 167 Completion Project, the highway will move freight more reliably to and from the port while taking truck traffic off local roads. Construction starts in mid-2022 and is scheduled to be completed in 2026. Once it’s done, the final project to complete the rest of the unfinished SR 167 between I-5 and Puyallup will get going. During the northbound I-5 Interstate Bridge closure Sept. 12-20, travelers between Vancouver and Portland will share the three existing lanes and sidewalk on the southbound bridge. A movable concrete barrier will shift lanes to allow for two lanes of travel in the direction of the heaviest commute times. For example, the bridge will have two southbound lanes and one northbound during the AM commute, and two northbound lanes and one southbound in the PM. This video shows how crews will switch the
