Since Locomotive 80 is being featured in Throwback Thursday, I thought I would post a tour video of her sister Locomotive 81. The railroad had three Locomotive 81’s. The Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark is an amazing place. This video shows the shop crew testing the whistle on Locomotive 81. Locomotive 81 was removed from service about 1958. It was donated to the White Pine Public Museum and move there about 1960. For thirty years she sat outside, in 1990, she was moved back to the Nevada Northern Railway engine house. She sat in the corner of the engine house until we started restoring her. Slowly but surely, steady progress has been made.

I’m sure you have heard the expression, blowing off steam! But have you ever seen it being done? This morning, Locomotive 81 and 93 were part of a photo shoot in front of the engine house. Before heading to her train Locomotive 81 needed to blow off some steam. Because of her boiler design she has two blow down valves. The fireman had to blow down both valves. After they were done, it was decided to stretch Locomotive 81’s legs with a short runby. We have been making lots of progress on Locomotive 81. I’ll be posting more on the progress that we have made in the coming week. As many of you know the Nevada Northern Railway has been very fortunate to still have the original machine shop and the machine tools. One of the questions we get is, “Do you still use the lathes, shapers and presses?” As this video shows yes we do, even the belt driven lathes. Eight rivets from 1917 needed to be replaced on Locomotive 81's boiler. Kyle and Dan from Wasatch Railroad Contractors, gave our shop crew some training in riveting. This video shows the team work that is required to get just one rivet in. There are hundreds of rivets on the boiler, fortunately for us only 8 needed replacing.
