Have you ever seen or heard an American alligator bellowing? This sound is an alligator's way of establishing its territory or letting other alligators know that it is ready to mate. Both males and females do this during the breeding season. Hearing the sound can be unforgettable, as was the case for some of this morning's Early Birding Tour participants. Seeing the "water dance" on their backs is pretty cool. Video: Molly Niekamp/Audubon Florida | Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

Sound on for the dulcet tones of the American alligator. Alligators are territorial, so they need to let other alligators know they are not to be messed with. When they bellow, they're sharing more information than just their irritation. They're letting potential rivals or mates know how big and bad they are. Video: an alligator arches its head and tail out of the water while making a loud deep rumble underwater. By Laura Bonneau/USFWS at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. | U.S. Fish and Wildlif

Check out this American alligator, named Sonny, bellowing on land somewhere in Florida. Alligators bellow as a way to communicate, especially during mating season! When they bellow, they’re announcing their presence and strength to attract mates or warn other alligators to stay away. This deep, powerful sound can even make the water vibrate around them, showing just how strong they are! 🐊 @livingwithgators #alligators #alligators #nature #wildlife #florida #reptile #reptiles #ehp #EvergladesHol

Alligator bellowing is one of our favorite sounds! 🔈 Male alligators actually make a subaudible sound beforehand that causes the water to bounce on his back, called the "water dance", which you can clearly see in this video. Bellowing gives information about an alligator's location as well as size. This is helpful for females to find suitable males, usually selecting males that are larger than them. #napleszoo #alligator | Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens

Male and female alligator bellowing! Alligators bellow to convey health and size information to surrounding gators for breeding, social, and territorial reasons. They bellow year round but with much more frequency in the breeding season. The sound emitted directly correlates to the gator’s size. When male alligators bellow, the water over their backs to bounce up, creating a “water dance” as you can see. Sometimes when they hear something like thunder or a heavy bass sound system they will think

Torpedo sure has a lot to say to Jim, our Curator of Reptiles 🐊 This deep, guttural growl is called bellowing. A bellow starts as a barely audible low-frequency vibration that quickly transitions into a very audible sound. The power of a bellow reflects an alligator’s size, which they may want to communicate to other alligators for mating or territorial purposes. 🎥 Jim, Curator of Reptiles | St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park

JJ bellowing this morning! Alligators bellow to convey health and size information to surrounding gators for breeding, social, and territorial reasons.
