The Robert Burns Monument at Alloway, near Ayr, Scotland, was built to honour the nation’s most famous poet. After Robert Burns died in 1796, supporters raised money by public subscription, and the monument officially opened in 1823. Designed as a classical Greek temple with nine columns representing the Muses, it stands above the River Doon and overlooks the Brig o’ Doon, made famous in Tam o’ Shanter. The monument forms part of today’s Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. Robert Burns, born in 1759
