In the wild, the parents would continue to feed the babies as they transition to solid food, discovering how to tackle the fruits, nuts, berries and seeds that make up their wild diet. We offer them plates of solid food alongside the formula. This process can take several weeks or even months, as we slowly reduce the amount and frequency of hand-feeding until they are finally consuming enough solid food by themselves.

We had a call from Derick, Belize Audubon Society’s head ranger at Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary. He found an adult Ringed Kingfisher, extremely skinny, unable to fly but with no fractures or obvious injuries. He clearly had some GI issues that had impacted his ability to hunt, so we treated him with anti-parasitic medication and before too long he was gaining weight and picking fish from his water bowl.
