Standing before the Maison Carrée, you’re looking at one of the best-preserved Roman temples anywhere in the world. Long thought to be a generic imperial monument, we now know it was dedicated to Gaius and Lucius Caesar, the adopted grandsons and heirs of Augustus. This wasn’t just architecture, it was propaganda in stone, a centerpiece of the imperial cult that tied loyalty to Rome directly to the emperor and his family, and a powerful statement of Rome’s presence in southern Gaul.
