Autumn olive, Elaeagnus umbellata, is an invasive shrub that came to the US from Asia around the 1830s as an ornamental tree. It was not found in Michigan until 1939 in Kalamazoo County and can be seen in forests, fields, roadsides, gravel pits, and pretty much anywhere. Autumn olive was also planted as wildlife food and habitat historically, however, it was found to be incredibly aggressive due to its ability to spread seeds widely through birds and mammals. Here in Western North Carolina, it’s aggressively invasive so the more we remove from the woods the better. Just be sure if you are snacking on them along the trail, don’t spit the seeds out and spread it even further! They are great fresh or cooked into jams or jellies, but
