Did you know that the ringtail "cat" is the state mammal of Arizona? Rocky the Ringtail, in particular, is the Arizona State Parks and Trails mascot. Ringtails are sometimes referred to as "miner's cats," but they are in fact not cats at all. They're in the same Procyonidae family as raccoons and coatimundis, and are primarily nocturnal. Rocky got busted vandalizing one of our historical buildings, so he had to sit in ringtail jail until we could safely relocate him. Rocky apologized and promise

🎥 Throwback to a surprise ringtail sighting — at a resort hotel, of all places! 🦝 Mark, our founder, caught this rare moment on camera and shares why the ringtail is one of his favorite desert animals. Despite the nickname, they’re not cats — they’re in the raccoon family, love french fries, and apparently, they don’t mind luxury accommodations. 🏨😂 🎙️ Turn your sound on for fun facts, desert wildlife insight, and a classic Mark-style story. (Merry Christmas from past Mark, by the way — wild

Back in March we posted a grainy video of an elusive animal caught for the first time ever on our trail cameras. That animal was a ringtail. Amazingly, we have captured footage of a second ringtail many miles away at a second park! This time, the ringtail stuck around long enough for us to get this great video, which we're excited to share with you. To jog your memory, a ringtail cat – also known as "miner’s cat" or "ring-tailed cat" – is actually not a cat at all, but more closely related to a

Very exciting! This was the first ever Ringtail captured on the wildlife cameras at Catalina State Park. They are very nocturnal and sleep in cool dens during the day. They were called miner's cats because they were excellent mousers that kept the rodent populations down in the mines. They also became the Arizona State mammal in 1986. | Catalina State Park
