Arctic air sweeps south as residents of the Pacific Northwest remain on guard after severe flooding
A blast of arctic air is sweeping south from Canada and spreading into parts of the northern U.S., while residents of the Pacific Northwest brace for possible mudslides and levee failures from floodwaters that are expected to be slow to recede.
Another atmospheric river is forecast to pound the Pacific Northwest with several inches of rain on Monday and Tuesday just after a short break in the rain. Most river levels in Washington and Oregon are now beginning to fall and forecast to remain below major flood stage in the next few days.
Back-to-back storms have hit the Pacific Northwest, prompting the governor of Washington to declare a state of emergency. Flooding and mudslides have also hit Oregon, and the weather is e3xpected to stay the same for the rest of the week.
Spruce Hill Winery, a family-owned operation that specializes in producing small-batch wines sourced from the Pacific Northwest, will open a tasting room in Gig Harbor in mid-January.
The Pacific Northwest is expected to see up to seven inches of rain this week, as the eastern United States braces for arctic cold.
