At the core of the Hugging Face hacking incident were a series of human choices that traded security for speed.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is calling on artificial intelligence companies to slow the development of their most powerful models, arguing that AI’s rapid progress is beginning to outpace the industry’s ability to ensure the technology remains safe.

Lawmakers worried about the existential risk posed by new artificial intelligence products demanded information from OpenAI on Thursday with separate queries that underscored growing concerns in Washington about the technology's potential to elude human control.

Independent AI evaluators and OpenAI have published investigations into the hacking of digital library Hugging Face by rogue agents. The reports find that the agents went to extraordinary lengths to cheat their testing environments and collude among themselves.

"Sorry, but asking Jacob about AI extinction risk is like asking your AC guy about climate change," Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue wrote on X.

Acquiring Hugging Face will give the chipmaker access to a platform developers use to collaborate, test and share AI tools, potentially providing valuable insight and data that could help it narrow the technology gap with top American and Chinese labs.

Nvidia had previously invested $235 million in Hugging Face during its Series D funding round in August 2023.
