The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority formed to handle the state’s rail projects. The new Long Bridge will add two additional tracks over the Potomac River to help ease heavy train traffic.

The statewide rail plan is updated every four years, with 2018 being the last time the state published its long-range plan.
