One left-wing lawmaker was forcibly removed by police after trying to disrupt proceedings, while footage showed scuffles breaking out as security tried to restore order.
Brazilian lawmakers voted on Wednesday to shorten the prison sentence of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, although the bill is likely to face resistance from senators, the Supreme Court and leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The bill, which needs approval from the Senate and faces a likely veto from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, could allow Bolsonaro to leave jail in just over two years, according to the text’s rapporteur. The hard-right populist was handed a 27-year sentence in September for plotting to illegally stay in power after losing the 2022 election.
