Ukraine’s Navy says it has carried out what it describes as the world’s first naval battle between two unmanned surface vessels, claiming that one of its drone boats destroyed a Russian drone in the Black Sea.

With troop movements on the front line largely frozen by the threat of drones overhead, Ukraine and Russia are locked in a high-stakes race to spend on military technology. Russia in recent weeks has ramped up its production and deployment of jet-powered drones, which are able to evade Ukraine’s defenses more effectively.

In place of an antenna, it featured an AI-powered minicomputer sold commercially by US technology company Nvidia, which rendered it capable of directing itself to the type of target it was programmed to spot – likely propane tanks in this case – lock on to it and proceed to strike.
