Rob Reiner’s son and suspected murderer Nick Reiner has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, according to a report from TMZ. Reiner, 32, was reportedly taking medication for the disorder that made him “erratic and dangerous” in the weeks before his parents’ murder.

He was diagnosed with schizophrenia several years ago and was treated with medication, the sources said. It's not clear how soon before the slayings his medication was changed.

The son of film director Rob Reiner remained in jail Tuesday morning without bail ahead of a possible court appearance some time this week following his arrest in the killings of his parents. Nick Reiner,

"From my interactions with Nick, he seemed like a gentle guy," Douglas Shaffer, who worked on Being Charlie as an executive producer, tells PEOPLE. Nick wrote the movie's script with friend Matt Elisofon, based in part on Nick's experiences with drug addiction from an early age, while dad Rob directed the film.

The son of filmmakers Rob and Michelle Reiner appeared in court on Wednesday to face murder charges. Nick Reiner only said three words during the hearing, but did not enter a plea, as his attorney requested a continuance.
