Firefighters in Northern California continued to increase containment on the Lucas Fire burning near the Mendocino National Forest, as evacuations remained in effect Sunday.

A packed house of Lake County residents crowded a meeting room of the Running Creek Casino to listen to Cal Fire officials provide an update on the progress of combatting the Lucas Fire Sunday.

The Lucas Fire has burned more than 1,000 acres in the hills north of Clear Lake, and evacuation orders extend to the edge of the community of Upper Lake. The wildfire was reported around 9 a.m. Thursday near the Mendocino-Lake county line 6 miles northwest of Upper Lake. The first evacuation orders were issued around 4 p.m.

Containment indicates what percentage of the fire perimeter has been surrounded by a control line. In this case, it means that 20% of the wildfire is halted from spreading, while 80% is still uncontrolled.

The Lucas Fire burning near the Mendocino-Lake County line grew to over 4,000 acres on Saturday and evacuation orders remained in place.

Firefighters on Saturday made containment gains on the Lucas fire above Upper Lake, while officials are planning a Sunday evening community meeting to offer updates on the situation.

Authorities warned that dry weather and heavy winds could contribute to the rapid spread of wildfire as a massive blaze scorched nearly 3,500 acres in Mendocino County.

A wildfire burning in Lake and Mendocino counties has grown to over 3,400 acres, CAL FIRE said on Friday. The Lucas Fire broke out Thursday morning and has prompted several evacuation orders and warnings in the area.
