The online textbook and homework help company has seen its stock price crater since the pandemic and the rise of ChatGPT.

Online education company Chegg filed a lawsuit on February 24th against Google claiming that the company’s AI-generated summaries of search results have hurt its traffic and revenue, Reuters reports.

Will other companies follow suit and go after Google for sending less traffic to sites and publishers with these new AI Overviews?

Chegg is only the latest publisher to take issue with Google’s efforts to inject Google Search with AI. A number of news outlets claim they’ve seen an impact on traffic from Google’s AI summaries in search, which draw from sources around the web to answer Google Search user queries.

In its court filing, Chegg argues that Google forces companies to supply proprietary content in order to be included in Google’s search function, unfairly exercises its monopoly power within search, and reaps benefits from Chegg's content without paying for it.

Shares of Chegg dropped after the company said it’s conducting a review of the business and exploring alternatives including a sale or taking it private as the provider of individualized learning support to students keeps losing subscribers to AI-enabled rivals.

Chegg Inc. is weighing “strategic alternatives” for its business, saying that traffic to its web-based education platform has been decimated following Google’s launch of an artificial intelligence-powered summary tool.
