Fans of the "Avatar" franchise will have to wait a few years to see the next two installments, if they happen at all.
Avatar 4 release date, filming details, and future sequel plans reveal when James Cameron’s next Pandora epic arrives.
Director James Cameron is back with biggest and longest “Avatar” movie yet, “Fire and Ash.” Taking place shortly after the events of 2022’s “The Way of Water,” “Fire and Ash” ups the stakes even further, bring massive battles between the Na’vi and humans, and introduces the series’ scariest villain yet.
Sigourney Weaver told Dexerto that the future of Avatar 4 and 5 is uncertain when discussing her role in Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Avatar 4 currently has a confirmed release date of 21 December 2029, having been delayed from its original 18 December 2026 release in June 2023. The fifth movie is set to follow on 19 December 2031.
Avatar 4 is currently set to hit cinemas on December 21, 2029, though there is ongoing speculation that Cameron will take more of a backseat for the next two sequels. That's not something the director particularly subscribes to. "I mean, there's no reason not to. I'm healthy, I'm good to go," Cameron told Empire.
Narratively, though, Fire and Ash exposes the franchise’s diminishing returns. Cameron still stages action with trademark clarity, but the déjà vu is harder to hide. The film is polished and often thrilling, yet it’s also the clearest indication that this saga may have finally reached its end.
Though writer-director James Cameron has played coy about whether or not the planned 4th and 5th Avatar movies will still be happening, actor Jack Champion revealed to io9 that he has filmed “more than just a little bit” of scenes for the next film.
The third installment in James Cameron's epic sci-fi saga is headed to theaters, but early reviews seem to indicate the saga may be losing the plot.
"Avatar: Fire and Ash" is now in theaters, but does the movie have a post-credits scene teasing "Avatar 4" or future storylines? Here’s what to know as the credits roll.
