ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan football began last week in a state of shock. Kyle Whittingham’s team had just came off an uninspiring win over a Mid-American Conference school, the kind of performance that can derail a season before it ever gets going.

And, if there’s such a thing as a moral victory, this was a moral loss.

Venables took over as head coach before the 2022 season. His first year did not go well as Oklahoma went 6-7, marking its first losing season since 1998. That summer, Venables took his staff to visit Whittingham while he was the coach of the Utah Utes.
