Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, has outlined two ways he thinks AI development could go "very badly". China has also reacted to the renewed safety debate after Donald Trump came out in favour of winning the AI race without slowing down.

The Chinese foreign ministry remarks follow a push by top American AI industry executives to slow down frontier AI development to address existential risks to humans.

It follows the Anthropic CEO 's calls for a slowdown in AI development, in a way that China doesn't pull ahead.

The president blamed “negative forces” for raising alarm. Speaker Johnson said the U.S. cannot “lose the race to China.”
