University of Chicago student Karen Chuchuca thought of her father, an Ecuadorian immigrant who has worked as a truck driver for 25 years, when President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this week reinforcing a federal law requiring commercial motor drivers speak English.

Chicago was one of hundreds of cities across the country where people took to the streets to mark May Day, a holiday with deep roots in the city’s labor history.

Activists have organized May Day protests in Chicago and around the country to protest President Trump's policies, especially around immigration.
