New court documents show Powell, a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) correctional deputy, was gunned down as he and his 5-year-old daughter returned home and were getting out of their vehicle. As he fell, Powell pulled his 5-year-old daughter close, using his last breath to protect her.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office identified the deputy as Basil Powell, 39, who had worked at the West Corrections Center for three years.

PBSO says Basil Powell, 39, was returning home around 7:30 p.m. Monday. As Powell got out of his car, he was immediately shot multiple times.
